Master of Science in Life Sciences – education for research and leadership in agriculture and forestry
With its Life Sciences Master`s programme in Applied Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, the Swiss College of Agriculture SHL offers an extended education at tertiary level which qualifies graduates to undertake scientific work at a university or research institution or to take a leadership position requiring a scientific background. This unique degree programme is part of a Swiss-wide-coordinated MSc in Life Sciences, offered in different academic fields by four universities of applied sciences – Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZFH (School of Life Sciences, Wädenswil), University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland FHNW (School of Life Sciences, Muttenz), University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland HES-SO (sites at Fribourg, Lullier, Changins and Sion) and Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH (Swiss College of Agriculture, SHL, Zollikofen).
The specialisation in Applied Agricultural and Forestry Sciences offered at the Swiss College of Agriculture encompasses three major fields of study:
- Management of Value Chains in Agriculture and Forestry
- Sustainable Agricultural and Forestry Production Systems
- Agriculture and Forestry in Transition
During the Master`s degree programme, which lasts at least one-and-a-half years, knowledge and know-how is focussed on a specialised subject and is deepened by means of a Master`s thesis – an in-depth, application-oriented research project. Thus, depending on subject and major, scientific, economic, social and political issues relating to agriculture, forestry, the manufacture and distribution of food and wood products, natural resources management , climate change, sustainability and development can be studied.
